The D'Angelo Family in The Burg (Joan's Family)

Hi...
I enjoy your website so much...it brings back memories to me
of the time I spent in Trenton with my Dad and all the
memories he shared with me whenever we went back to his
old neighborhood.
I am now working with a writer to publish a play about my
dad's life in Trenton before and after World War II. We
are planning to have the play translated and bring it to
Italy next summer to the Spoleto Festival and also the town
my father lived in in Italy during the war.
My father was born on January 18, 1916 and graduated from
Trenton High School in 1934. Several years ago I went on
your site and someone responded to my inquiries about my dad
(Nicholas C. D'Angelo) and told me there were some people who
lived either behind or on top of the People's Bakery who still
remembered my dad, Bootsy D'Angelo, well. Unfortunately,
I can't find the message they wrote to me on your site or
get into the account I created on your site. My email
address is joanslavin@aol.com...but I think you have a
new way to access the site now and the computer doesn't
recognize my name. I don't think it would be good to
create a new account, because the old note telling me
about the people on top of the People's Bakery probably
wouldn't be in a new account that i would create.
I would love to talk to anyone who might be able to tell
me about Chambersburg in the 20s, 30s and 40s. My father
would have been 95 this January. He was the son of Nicholas
and Lucia D'Angelo who lived originally at 404 Elmer St.
and then moved to Villa Park on Quinton Ave. My father had
two sisters, Katherine and Mary and four brothers, Danny,
John, Tony and Joe. Unfortunately, no one in the family
is still alive. He also dated in High School a girl called
Dorothy Mooney...who he almost married...she lived next door
to him on Quinton Ave at 835 Quinton Ave. It would be so
helpful to us to speak to ANYONE born around this time
period to help us get some more background info for the play.
Of course, it would also be MORE wonderful to find someone
who might have actually known him. Can you help me? We
would be so grateful JoanSlavin@aol.com, 609-654-4114

HI MAC AND JOAN....IT'S A SMALL WORLD. MY COUSIN JOHN DeANGELO LIVED ON QUINTON AVE. WITH HIS TWO BROTHERS AND A SISTER. THEY LIVED IN THE 100O BLOCK. I KNOW THERE ARE MANY DeANGELOS IN CHAMBERSBURG AND THEY WERE RELATED TO MY GRANDFATHER WHO WAS A SYVESTRI. I AM 91 YEARS OLD AND PRETTY FAMILAR WITH MOST DeANGELOS, LIKE THOSE THAT BUILT THE DEL RIO RESTAURANT ON HAMILTON AVE. MY MOTHER WENT TO CASANDINO, ITALY ALONG WITH ONE DeANGELO AND OTHERS FROM BUTLER ST.IN THE 70'S. CHARLIE DeANGELO MET US IN FLORIDA ABOUT THAT SAME TIME. I WAS MORE FAMILAR WITH NEW COLONIAL BAKERY THAN PEOPLES. WE MOVED FROM THE BURG A FEW TIMES BUT I ALWAYS WAS CONNECTED IN SOME WAY. BEST REGARDS.
Hi Ralph:)
You are the best and its great to
hear about the people and places of the ole Burg area from you always:)
thanks so much for this info...my grandfather was a contractor, so he might have been the D'Angelo who built Del RIo's. i have been doing a lot of digging around in family history lately and have found some interesting info
my grandmother was a Graziano and she was the daughter of john and katerina who lived at 34 bayard st. my grandmother had a brother michael who was a well known minor league baseball player. he played in the city league and was a member of the kent athletic association. her other brother tom married sadie and as far as i know, neither mike or tom had children. I also found out through a cousin that my great grandmother, katerina, was very religious and also knew some things about healing people and many of the people in chambersburg would come to her house for ointments, to help deliver babies, etc. my dad said once when he dislocated a shoulder playing football, she was the one who put it back in the socket for him. he lways said people lined up around the block to see her and she never charged. when my father was in Italy, he visited relatives in Casandrino too... they were his father's half sister Giovanna and her husband antonio D'Addio.
I also noticed in the trenton directory for 1920 that there were a lot of D'Angelo's that lived at 408 Elmer St...all men...my dad's family lived at 404 Elmer St. until 1926 when they moved to Quinton Ave. The men at 408 Elmer had names similar to my dad's family (John, Joe, Nicolas, Carl (my dad's middle name) and Antonio)
Ralph...my Dad graduated from Trenton High in 1934 and you might have known him as "Bootsy"...he played football, as did his brother Danny, who I think was about your age. Thanks so much for your response. I would love to hear more about Trenton at that time. I will read all your posts!! By the way, did you ever know or hear of Bertha M. Lane who lived at 35 Bayard St.? She was a pianist/organist/singer who played for the city square theater, which i guess was in trenton. she married the manager of the theater. she was also the organist and choir director at Immanuel Presbyterian in the Burg. She was quite a force of nature, I think.
