Quakerbridge Mall, Lawrence

Quakerbridge Mall, Lawrence
This was sort of the "Downtown" for many or most of
the Burg area folks of my Burg days:)

HI MAC....THE MALL COULD BE ONE OF THE REASONS WHY DOWNTOWN TRENTON IS IN SUCH A BAD STATE. THE SHOPPING HAS SHIFTED TO THE SUBURBS AND DOWNTOWN HAS CONVERTED TO A BUNCH OF STATE OFFICE BUILDINGS. IT USED TO BE " TRENTON MAKES THE WORLD TAKES". NOW, IT APPEARS, MOST PEOPLE WORK FOR THE STATE OR SOMEOTHER GOVT BODY. IN THE OLD DAYS WE LOOKED FORWARD TO GOING DOWNTOWN TO SHOP AND HAVE A HOTDOG AND ROOT BEER AT THE 5 AND 10. NOW, THE CITY IS ONLY THE CAPITOL OF NEW JERSEY AND WHAT USED TO BE DOWNTOWN IS ONLY A PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT FOR STATE WORKERS. MOST OF MY FRIENDS AND RELATIVES HAVE PASSED AWAY AND MY VISITS ARE NOT AS MANY BUT I STILL HAVE MEMORIES I SHALL TREASURE. YOU AND TOM HAVE BROUGHT BACK THOSE MEMORIES FOR WHICH I'M VERY GRATEFUL. BEST REGARDS.

I never took to the mall. There are just some things that were not here in the 60' when I left and I did not adjust well to the change. The mall was a reaction to events that were larger than all of us.

I guess when we go away we don't like to see things change. I guess the World Trade Center was almost completed when I flew back in and it was like something that I simply did not understand and did not want it there.

But worse, I remember walking around town and around the mall and not seeing faces I knew. I was now the stranger in town.

Norman Rockwell ? Waiting for Jimmy Stewart to shake me and ... ah, it was good while it lasted wasn't it?

Hi Ralph & Skip:)
All the things you say about old
downtown Trenton might be true,
but they just didnt apply to my
Burg generation. This mall was new
and nice and easy to get to and all of our friends went there and many worked there. THIS was our
"Downtown" and I am forever grateful it was there for us:)

YOU'RE RIGHT MAC....TO PEOPLE OF MERCERVILLE AND HAMILTON SQUARE, THE MALL MAY BE LIKE DOWNTOWN. BUT FOR CHAMBERSBURG AND SOUTH TRENTON IT TOOK AWAY MANY STORES AND RESTAURANTS AND RECAME QUITE A DISTANCE FROM THEIR HOMES. FOR THESE PEOPLE, THEY WERE ABLE TO WALK DOWNTOWN YEARS BACK AND NOT WATCH THAT PART OF THE CITY TURN INTO THE MESS IT NOW IS.

the mall scene had a different kind of vibe than downtown.

everything under one roof too.

one thing was good, you were inside if it rained.

I love shopping in cities/towns instead of malls. Bordentown is a great example. The mall is not the reason I wouldn't go shopping in Trenton. Trenton is the reason I wouldn't go shopping in Trenton.

The problem with the idea that
Quakerbridge destroyed Downtown is
Downtown was done before quakerbridge was built.
Trentons crime and poverty problem destroyed downtown, not quakerbridge.
