Contes Saloon Liberty Street and South Clinton Avenue, The Burg.
1401 South Clinton Avenue
Even if you never went in the place you drove past it often
for many of the Burg folks.
This was once The Old Spot Cafe in the 1950s and 1960s
(Owners Stephen J and Anne B Witnowski). Edmund Witkowski
also worked there.
In the 1920s this was John B Leikam's Cafe.
In the 1900s this was George Beck's Confectionary.

Hi Mack: I just can't believe all the local bars or soloons the Burg had in those days and also in the surrounding areas. To qualify for a liquor license must not have been too hard. When we had the bowling lanes we could'nt get one because we were too close to an existing one. That is why the people who bought the business moved elsewhere. At any rate, it was those little bars that brought the neighbors together, especially in the nickel beer days. Regards.
Hi Ralph:)
It is amazing how many Bars were
in the Burg..and if you add
Restaurants/Bars the number was
even greater.
It stands out in my mind that
Villa Park and Franklin Park had
far fewer bars and restaurants
so the Burg benefitted from the
patronage of those folks.
Your right Mack, about Villa Park and Franklin Park. They were newer sections of the city and mostly residential. After seeing Chambersburg loaded with soloons, they evidently desided to limit the drinking places elsewhere. I hope you're not snowed in again, what a winter for the Burg. Just like old times. Keep warm and enjoy.
