Some Burg Reflections from Joe Z

I remember the fine restaurants and fun being there,
places like LaGondola, my favorite, Lou Crecco's, The
Casino for dogs. Places in my younger days, Paramount
Bakery, The Chicken Store on South Clinton, Broadway
Records and playing Pinball at Radice's Hole in the Hall
(It was on Broad St. same side as Wineberg's Dept. Store,
think maybe 2 machines, cost a nickel).
Roe's Aunt Angie use to make the salads at Creccos.
The bar was neat for a drink before dinner, the clams
casino were excellent. LaGondola was my favorite place,
Angelo, his wife Linda, the father, Jerry the bartender
really made the place. It was old, but the food and
warmth of the place made you feel at home. I think Roe
and I were there twice a week when we were dating.

My friend Mike use to work at LaGondola back in the late 70's and early 80's as a dish washer/bus boy. I think he was going to Notre Dame High at the time, and working their after school or on weekends.

I remember him telling me about the night Franco Harris who was a running back for the Pittsburg Steelers, showed up at the LaGondola to dine with his family and friends. I think Mike got Franco's autograph that night, I remember him being pretty happy about that.

Mack: Thank you for posting the comments. Roe and I enjoyed the Mussels Marinara at LaGondola, Angelo had the mussels imported and they were placed inside the shells and covered with the marinara sauce, they were the best ever. He also made a great shrimp scampi. Never a bad meal and I never filled up on the bread.
