Neil Gervasio was born in Trenton in 1910, one of 7 children
of Raffaele and Tomasina "Angelina" Gervasio. When Neil was
3 -1/2 years old his parents returned to Casandrino, Italy,
with Neil and his siblings for an extended visit.
Unfortunately, World War I broke out in Europe and the family
became stranded and unable to return to America because the
Germans were sinking the passenger ships.
Neil went through the public school system in Italy, but he
always remained proud of his American birthright and returned
to America when he 16 years old. His brother Tammaro also
returned to America and his wife, Vincenza, and their son,
Ralph, followed soon afterwards. Neil married his beloved
Rose Aversano, Neil originally worked for the Pennsylvania
Railroad WPA Electrification Projects during the Great
Depression and then was employed at John A. Roeblings/CFI
for many years until his retirement. He was an AFL-CIO shop
steward while there and was promoted to carpenter-rigger first
class at the time of his retirement.
Neil was active in the Italian community of Chambersburg in
Trenton and served two terms as president of the Neapolitan
Society, which sponsored the annual "Feast of Lights" in honor
of the Madonna of Casandrino.

Hi Mack: Father Gervasio's mother is a DeMarco and is related to my grandmother. His mother's name is Orsalini and they lived on Hudson St. We visited the DeMarcos in Casandrino and my mother spent the summer there. The last time I saw Orsalini was many years ago but she was muck closer to my aunt Mary Salvatore. I'm not sure if the Gervasio you mention is related but it seems to be. Regards.
Hi Mack: Now I'm told Gervasio went back to Casandrino and married Orsalina, who was the sister of his first wife. All this is what my cousins told me years ago and I;m not sure if it's correct. It's been a long time and we discuss it on occasions. Best wishes and take care.
Hi again Mack. Now I'm told I got my grandmother's maiden name wrong. It's not Demarco, it's DeCarlo. I'm sorry about that. My niece tells me I'm getting old.
