Espresso

Espresso

The first espresso machines were introduced at the beginning
of the 20th Century, with the first patent being filed by
Luigi Bezzera of Milan, Italy, in 1901. Medaglia D'Oro ,
since 1924 has been the #1 selling espresso.
Espresso was around and a part of life in the Burg.
I am sure some of my readers know where the best Espresso
was found in their Burg day:)

Love the stuff, and make our own from scratch -
roasting green beans,
grinding the beans before use in a decent espresso machine
Gets us a perfect cup every time.

Back in the day, there were some neighborhood coffee roasters in the Burg. These were small operations with loyal customers.

One was in the very small builidng at the corner of Hewitt and Whittaker. Sorry, but I do not recall the owner. Their roaster was gas- fired and probably handled no more than five pounds at a time.

Learning to roast properly takes time and practice. The roasting process really stinks of burning sugar smoke and there is lots of chaff that is released. The smell is not as bad as burning tires, but you don't think much of coffee when the beans are roasting.
