Wetzel Field, Villa Park
A new view of one of our ole stomping grounds:)
As I lived on Liberty Street 4 blocks away I used to
enter this field via the alley behind the gas station
on Chambers Street and Liberty Street.
For some reason when it rained, it seemed Wetzel Field
got less muddy than Franklin Park.
Football in the mud was great and when we got home we
put our clothes in the hamper and they magically cleaned
themselves! Remember the sound of sneakers in the dryer
..thump thump...thump thump..
We thought we were the norse god Thor coming back into
the house after mud football.. for some reason Mom and
GrandMa seemed to think we were just a bunch of kids who
had created more work for them washing clothes. Strange.

Mack: I could still see me there hitting fly balls to my boys. Still remember the Schroths games and my son Jeff being batboy for them.

Back in the 1940's, my buddies and I spent many evenings watching Trenton's Industrial League play at wetzel field.
(American Steel and Wire, Panelyte, J.A. Roebling, and many other local factories sponsored Industrial League baseball.) The field was named for Dr.Wetzel, noted Trenton educator. It was the home field of the 2nd Trenton High School which was located on Chestnut and Hamilton Avenue. (The first Trenton High School was on Mercer Street in Mill Hill)

Hi Joe:)
It amazes me how many places
and street scenes in the Burg
look the same as they did long
ago. To outsiders this has little
or no meaning. But for those of
us who were part of the Burg area
or from the Burg itself, these visions contain the spirit of a
lost but great epoch.
