701 Whittaker Avenue, The Burg

701 Whittaker Avenue, The Burg.
The corner of Whittaker Avenue and Beatty Street.
Another view of what was once Chianti's Restaurant in my
Burg day:)
This was Hiel's Cafe & Recreation Center in the 1950s.
This was Anthony's Bar in the 1960s.

Did this place have a bowling alley? If so, I was a pinboy way back then. If so, this is also the place where my Mom clocked me with her 2 ton pocketbook when she caught me smoking.

Bob,

You bet it was a bowling alley! First (of course) there were manual pin setters -- powered 100% by kids from the neighborhood (like me!). Then came Brunswick Semi-Automatic pin setting machines, 50% powered by kids. Finally there were fully automatic setters.

Original owners were John and Jake Heil, there was Joe and Leo Derrico.

I believe there was a fire in the late 60s or so.

Bowlers would roll a coin down the alley as tip at conclusion of a game.

My parents owned this building and we lived in the apt upstairs. The restaurant was called Colonial Lounge with my grandmom as the cook (the BEST) - Maria's Kitchen. My mom and I were waitresses and my dad the bartender. We sold the business to my uncle who then renamed it The Keg. Then it was sold again and became Chianti's. Yes there had been a bowling alley before all of this.
