The Dinger Brothers Fire, Liberty Street, The Burg
I think this was in the late 1970s:)
I remember that day. I was on the riverfront where the abandoned
US Steel Plant was. There was an old black man who caught fish in the
river and sold them from his truck, he was fishing and relaxing.
The river was low so we walked under the Trenton Makes. Why?
Because we could. I think it was late afternoon when we began to
see the smoke cloud. As I was walking home trying to guess where the
fire was I turned onto Liberty Street from Woodland Street and saw
it was Dinger Brothers on fire. I was worried for all the folks on
the block. The fire did melt the siding of a home or 2 and Dinger
Brothers paid to fix that. I remember afterward Dinger Brothers had
something folks signed in Liberty Deli that allowed them to rebuild.
My guess was they had grandfathered zoning and could
continue to operate if the neighbors said it wasnt a problem.
