Didn't necessarily have to be clothes...drapes, curtains, tableclothes..as well as blouses, dresses, shirts...hold on to the old, but make look new. My father had a cleaning business in the front of our house on Beatty St in the late 40's early 50's.

Thank You Sax:)
PS: Love the stories about playing local places in the area and Steely Dan:)

It was a great time for me...Dicepalo would bring the Jay & the Americans "roadie van" home from the City and the two of us along with Donald and Walter (Fagan and Becker) would cruise North Trenton stopping at the Battle Monument Steak House and hitting most of the black clubs in the area to jam.
Wish I had a recording device for some of those jams!

Hi Mr.Saxman,
I'm Dave, Mack's brother.
I've been getting into a Steely Dan
phase lately, listening to all of their old stuff.
It's really cool that you used to hang around with Fagan and Becker.

I've read that Fagan was a "Jazz snob" who looked down on popular music. It's funny because popular music is what he ended up doing so
well.
Could you tell me what your impression of Fagan was
when you used to hang out?

Hey Dave....My impression of both Donald & Walter..regulare guys really, really in love with music.
True they where Jazz buffs coming out of Bard College in NY where they had a band The Leather Canary with Chevy Chase!..these guys had a sense of humor! I met them through my friend Johnny Dicepalo who at that time was the drummer for Jay & the Americans. Becker and Fagan used pseudos Gustav Mahler and Tristan Fabriani when the played with the Americans. They where, are, both fabulous muscians..brilliant! They did what they had to do in the "pop music" world to meet the right people and make the right moves. Johnny played on the very first album they did..You Got To Walk It Like You Talk It..soundtrack for the movie of the same name done by Richard Pryor...I have the cuts if you want me to send you one. Also on this album was their founder and producer Kenny Vance (one of the singers with the Americans). Johnny lives in Ft Meyers, FL and is not playing anymore...his last gig in Trenton was with Ernie White. We are planning to go done to Ft Meyers in June, when Steely Dan will be playing in the area and get together with them all!

Hi Saxman,
Thank you for sharing your stories.
It must be really cool being part
of such a creatively gifted group of friends.
Was it a challenge to improvise along with them when you played the clubs in Trenton?.
Their chord progressions seem to
be all over the place. lol
Did you used to go to New York City
to jam also?.

Sorry about all of the questions.
Thanks!
Dave

Dave...don't mind the ???'s..no problem! Are you a musician?

My association with the guys was pre-Steely Dan when they where with the Americans for a couple of years. The jams where mostly r&r, blues..according to the club we where at...so mostly standard r&r/blues progressions. You must be referring to the famous "mu major" chord structure that they invented. Here is a great site that might interested you about it http://jmdl.com/howard/steelydan/mu-major.html

Never did NY stuff with them..just hung-around with the Americans - gigs, recording sessions, parties and spent time with them during the early days of Steely Dan..before my friend Johnny left them.

Sax,

Yes, I play guitar and so does Mack.
I like a lot of what Larry Carlton
did with the Dan, and the guitar leads done by the various session players that were on their albums.

Thanks for the link!. I'll check it out. They do have a "signature" progression in their tunes
I used to hear Jay and the American's "Cara Mia" and "Come a little bit closer" on WBUD.
What a voice he had. Like Roy Orbison.

O.K. enough music talk in the Cleaners and Dyers in the Burg section. lol.

Thanks for the info!
Dave
