I used to hang out at Bodnar's all the time. Helped to pump gas. Used their tire tank to fix the flats on my bike.

Frankie, Johnny and Joe were great guys.

And Willie worked the car wash. You grabbed the thing on rails and pushed it up one way for wash, wipe the car down, and waalk it back the other way with water only for a rinse.

All a great bunch of Burg guys -- nice businessmen, too.

I'll never forget seeing the old station as the supplier of the car for the DC gunmen.

SJBill. are you from the neighborhood? I grew up in the 300 block of Genesee, went to St Stephens Grammer School and Church I am in Florida and try to get back to Trenton at least once a year for a visit, it breaks my heart to see what happened to the old neighborhood...

I walked past your house to get to Harrison School.

Our home was between Gliba's and Kovach's candy store on South Clinton.

You remember Chorba-bachi, the caretaker of St. Stephens's school? He spent most of his time yelling, "Hey you kids! Get the hell outa here!", to us. ;-)

Seriously, I loved the fellow, and loved being in the neighborhood with the school, the church bells and Father Kish. They were truly grand times.

I remember as a kid, most every Saturday all the ladies were out front, pulling the weeds from between the cracks in the sidewalk, sweeping and scrubbing the porched and washing down the sidewalt, I bet the new folks still do that NOT!!!

SJ, you must have lived right next door to the Pfaff's Pearl and her sister, they were right behind the St Stephen's rectory.. and as for Chorba bacsi, can never forget the "get da hell a ray" LOL and he never was without one of those little dried up cigars in his mouth, when they got too small to smoke he would stuff then into his pipe...do you remember the hurricane in 1958 that took the school roof off, flew right over the church and landed on the rectory.... I actually saw it go, was visiting friends on S Clinton and happened to look out their front door just as the roof took off.... and how about the Kovacs plumbers dang, this blog is bringing back so many memeories.. LOVE IT

SJBill...my grandmom (Freund), always referred to Fr. Kish as Fr. Grab-it-all, never by name. My parish was Immaculate, so I didn't understand, but she always held her pocketbook close, when Fr. Grab-it-all was around.
