986 South Broad Street, The Burg

986 South Broad Street, The Burg
Once upon a time this was Thatcher Lloyd Funeral
Home. I think Mr. Lloyd the Trenton High Science
Teacher in my Burg day was related to the owners.

I'm not sure but the younger Lloyd's name wmay have been Bruce. The family attended Calvary Baptist Church.

A very nice family they were.

Bruce is son of Dick Lloyd and I believe one of 3 children. He was science teacher at THS for many years.

Thanks for jogging the memory, Tom!

Do you remember Tony Copolla, a Phys Ed teacher from Jr 4, that went on to be a Science teacher at THS?

Tom Pass is of course correct.
Bruce Lloyd was the Trenton High
Teacher:)

I also worked with Tony Coppola. A real gentleman who passed away at a relatively young age.

Tom,

I hadn't heard of Tony's passing. I'm really sorry.

"Mr. Coppola" started off as my 7th grade PE and health teacher at Jr. 4. He was really patient with young kids. He coached the Tumbling Team in which I had no business being a part of. Tony was a great mentor, so it worked out OK.

Later on, after finishing up at THS, two years at Rider and a hitch in the Navy, he showed up taking an evening Organic Chemistry classes at Rider. This time around, I was to be HIS mentor. He was struggling in a very difficult class and all of us banded together to get us all up to speed.

I recall he was teaching Chemistry at THS. Last I saw him was in the early 70s.

He left a mark on me.

Mt Coppola was my Chemistry
Teacher at Trenton High in the
1979-1980 School Year.
He was a good guy and a good
teacher.

Thanks so much for posting these photos and memories - it's really great to see.

This is the house I grew up in and was indeed, Thatcher-Lloyd Funeral Home! My grandparents, Richard (Dick) and Florence Lloyd owned the family business. My father - their oldest child, Phil, was the last to operate it. He passed away 10 years ago.

My uncle, Bruce Lloyd, is Phil's younger brother and did teach science at Trenton High for many years.

There were 3 kids - Linda Lloyd is the youngest and they did attend Calvary Baptist Church.

Again, thanks for the nostalgia. It's good to know they are remembered well.

I'm sorry, that last comment is from me, Karen (Lloyd) Eakes - I'm not really sure why that username posted!

Hi Karen:)
Thank you for your comments about the blog:)
Its fun walking down memory lane with so many good folks.
I was amused at the Obitchuary name and assumed it was
a funeral home connected joke and did not mind it at all.
Tell me more about the family funeral home business and I
will make your comments a post. When was the funeral
home established? Was it always at this location?
Do you have any family pictures? (email me at Kirriemuir1962@gmail.com
) Bruce Lloyd was part of a GREAT Trenton High Science
Department:)

Hi Mack,

The business goes back 1 more generation to Florence's father (my great-grandfather), Ralph Thatcher. He was licensed as a funeral director as early as 1902 and probably even earlier (I remember seeing an old license of his with that year). I believe the original location of the funeral home was 958 S. Broad and Ralph had 986 commissioned to be built - it was finished in the late 20's or early 30's.

I've reached out to my family for more information. I will email you directly (off-group)with it, as well as pictures. We have plenty of photographs as far back as the 30s, from what I remember.

I live in Washington, DC so I may not be able to get my hands on the photos right away, but I won't forget the next time I'm home.

My uncle will be happy to hear you remember him well!

Also - 'Obitchuary' is in fact a pun drawn from my family business - it's my roller girl name. In my spare time, I'm a DC Rollergirl. I usually don't tell people that before they know that I'm an articulate, educated, young professional, lest they misjudge me for it, but alas, it was my gaff for not realizing I was still logged in to that email account:)

I'll be in touch...
