Mack,

Thanks for the photo. I think the tree was planted by the city after my dad sold it in 1976. We had all kinds of fun playing in the garages in the back yard. The house was crowded at times and seven of us boys slept in the back bedroom on the second floor. By the time I moved out in 1975 just my dad, my youngest brother and I were the only ones still living there.

Based on the census records for Revere Avenue, it appears most of these houses were built between 1900 and 1910. It was a fun place to grow up. Like much of Trenton, things went down hill beginning in the 1980s. Revere is probably not as bad as some other areas of Trenton but I suspect property taxes have resulted in many of the residences being converted into rental units. Used to be able to catch a bus to downtown Trenton at either Roebling and Revere or at Hamilton and Revere.

Stephen...I guess your family rivaled the Higham family for most kids in Villa Park. My granny lived at 903 Quinton, and I went to Immaculate with some (a very small percentage, as they ranged from infant to college) of the Highams.

I am very familiar with the Highams as I am one of them. I am #12. I suspected that you may have known one or two of my siblings as between Sept 1954 and Jun 1962 ten of us were attending Immaculate at one time or another. During the 1959-60 school year and again in the 1960-61 school year there were six of us at ICS.

Stephen...I should have known, the red hair was a dead give away.

Andrew Passerell at 866 Revere Ave. was my father's oldest brother and had the floral shop at that location. Last vowel was removed I assume for business purposes. Who remembers the little store closer to Hamilton Ave. I think we called it "Dirty Louis"

Tom Pass,

I remember the store Dirty Louis. Guess it was around 820 Revere. McCarrons lived at Hamiltron and Revere. Did a lot of exploring of St. Francis. Commonweath, Bert, Columbus, Revere, Mifflin, , Centennial, Quinton, Melrose, Lyndale, Fairmount and Park as well as alleys in between while growing up. Wetzel Paek and Villa Park were frequent haunts.

Yes, there were a number of us with red hair. I guess, depending upon your viewpoint, you were fortunste or unfortunste to graduate from Immaculate in 1962. My brother Tony graduated from ICS in 1961 and my sister Jane graduated from ICS in 1963. I didn't graduate from ICS until 1964. There were others who graduated in 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960, 1965, 1967 and 1969 as well as earlier years.

Stephen,
Do you remember story about Dirty Louis being shot in the belt buckle during a failed robbery? How about his son, Harold. A long tall drink of water.

Stephen said...

Tom Pass,

I'm afraid I don't recall the belt buckle story or the son. What sticks out in my mind about this store was the fact that you had to walk up four or five steps to get to the front door. Every other corner store I recall was only one step from the sidewalk.

Tom Pass said...

Stephen,

That is correct. The store had a number of steps up to front entrance.
