There were screens on the window that allowed us to grab them with our fingers and either walk along the ledge to observe what was going on. Way down in the last building, actross from the intersection of Freudenmacher Alley, there was a drop forge in that building. I can recall four of us kids clinging to the screen watching that thing beat the cr@p out of steel pieces and shaking the building at the same time. ;-)

Wow, SJBill, I thought I was the only person that knew the name of that Alley. I always thought that it was because my maiden name was Freund. Spent a lot of time there, and the alley behind Skelton Library off Malone, picking other peoples flowers and eating their tomatoes.

Alleys were the main thoroughfares for kids. We knew them all. Ours was Hagerty Alley, and there were signs. HAgerty had a gulley runnign downt eh middle that allowed us to play an unusual version of stickball. You hit the ball out and the kid that caught it had to roll it back over the bat. The gulley in our alley allwed the ball to run pretty true.

On Freudenmacher Alley, I think there was but one sign behind the old Victory theater.

The alley behind Skelton Library was Jenter Alley (I had to look it up, though).

Finally, there is no friuit sweeter than a stolen one. ;-)

SJBill, there was a Freudenmacher Alley sign at Beatty St behind Sanders Soda Shop (I believe it's still there). The building it was on was a grain and feed store, when I was little. My dentist, Dr Lavine, was right at the alley and Beatty St, attached to the back of Sanders.

Maybe that was the sign I remember. There weren't many.

I used to bend the fins of Dr. Lavines window air conditioner, every time I walked by. ;-)

Of course when isnide Sander's as "customers", we used to play matchbook football while drinking root beer floats.

Did youa attend Harison or the parallel Parochial School universe?
