I was always asked to run across the street to bring home something for dinner. Abey and Eddie were great to deal with.

They had a bathtub on a bench in a side walkway that was used to "freshen-up" any celery and carrots that might have gone a little soft. ;-)

Mack...when I was born in 1943 my parents lived at 730 South Clinton. My older sister tells me there was a candy store on the corner of S Clinton and Dye. I you have a pic of that area, would like to see it.....paul

Paul,

You lived/grew up about 400 feet away, but I was 3 years younger. Did you ever play B-Ball in our court behind our old place at 809, or at Tal Brody's court behind his place?

There was a candy store on that corner of S. Clinton and Dye.

Do you remember the used bike store a cuppla doors from Bodnar's?

I cannot find records for
730 South Clinton.
Was that the apartment building
at Hudson & Clinton?
If it was ,it burned down years
ago.

Mack...I think I have the wrong address...it was on the same side of the street as the bicycle shop and between Hudson and Dye (closer to Dye)...might be 713?? Since the Banana Supply place was across the street on the 800 block. I remember the apartment house on Clinton and Hudson..ours was a row house.
SJBILL I did not grow-up in that neighborhood...my parents moved when I was 2. They bought the candy store on the corner of Home Ave and Beatty St...owned that until 1948 and then moved across the street to 607 Beatty St..where I lived until I left at 18 yrs of age. Went through school with Tal and spent time over his house above the hardware store.

Paulie,

Did you know Fred Schultheis? He lived in the third house away from Bodnar's after they expanded the station in the early 50s. Fred lived right next to the bicycle shop.

Maybe your old place was a victim of Bodnar's service station expansion -- I think about 2 or 3 homes may have been impacted.

While you're at it, since you play the tenor horn and know Richie "Alto Madness" Cole (remember his keyboard player Rosalinda DeLeon ;-) ), did you ever play or visit our club in Lakewood in the 70s? It was called Richard's Lounge. Richie Cole played there a few times, as did a lot cats of NY and Philly.

Hi Sax:)
Type the word DADDIO in the
Search Blog at the top when on the main page.
This is the part of the 700 block
of South Clinton.
What was Pat Daddio's store in my
Burg day was Kathleen Wirag's
Bikes before that (715). The houses
next to it can be seen in the picture:)

I worked a number of gigs with Richie Cole and also worked at Richard's but not with Richie.

Mack..I checked out the Daddio entry and looking at the pic it "rattled the brain". Our house was down toward Dye St about 1/2 to 3/4's of the way. Last time I passed there it had a little wrought iron railing.
SJBILL...did not know Fred Schultheis..we moved to Beatty St when I was 2. I do remember Richard's, do remember going there, not playing! And as far as Richie..I am going to see him on Mar 8th up here in NH. He has family in Grantham, NH and has done a Jazz On A Sunday Afternoon gig at the Eastman Sites country club for the last few years. Had a great reconnect with him last year..had not seen each other for over 20 years!!

In addition to building and running the sound system at Rich's I was busy inspecting the quality of the tequila.

Rich is still doin' OK, living in NYC. His son, Mal, is playing drums, like his dad, and living in town. Last time I saw Rich's daughter, she was exceptionally gorgeous and living in New Hope.

I try to stay connected with that community of musicians as much as possible. A few of them are living in the Delaware Water Gap area.

Tequilla or "too kill ya" My drink for years was Cuervo Gold and grapefruit juice. Not just for breakfast....
