22 Roebling Avenue, The Burg.
Once upon a time this was Stanky's Meat Market:)
A Blog about the Chambersburg area of Trenton NJ. The Burg we all loved and miss. If you were from the Burg I hope many of the pictures and lists and comments under them from good folks bring back some nice memories. Villa Park, Franklin Park, South Trenton, and nearby Hamilton also mentioned. Use the search box atop the blog to find schools, churches, streets, stores, bars etc that you remember. Over 4000 posts and 3000 pics. Enjoy:)

This was just across the street from the block on which I lived. Stanky was a good butcher. He had a huge wooden butcher block in the back.
On this corner, there were pipes that extended from the sidewalk. Long ropes were strung across Genesee St., at Roebling and at Hudson St., for the kids that attended St. Stephen's Catholic School. The had no playground, so the street served just fine. Safety Patrol kids managed the ropes if any traffic needed to enter or exit that play area.
IIRC, there was a garage door in the rear of this building. It housed the delivery truck for Stepien's Pickels.
The house just behind Stanky's was owned by Pat Pone -- a former city official, county constable, barber and Notary Public. Pat had a barber shop upstairs in what was formerly his middle bedroom. He loved using straight-razors.
Pat used to go fishing with my Dad below the dam at Gropp's Lake when off duty. Pat always wore a black suit -- even while fishing & wearing waders.
I still have his wife's, Mary Pone, gnocci board to this day. It's a treasure. Have no idea how how we came by it.
SJBill...remember when Mr Pone would open the fire hydrant for us kids, in the summer? He had an "official" key to open it.
