Reverend Klesken was the pastor for period of time. He had two sons, Dan and Joe Joe played trumpet and attended THS and College of NJ with me.
Joe was in our Music Theory classes, remember Pass?
We where friends outside of school...starting with being Boy Scouts in Troop 1 that met at the Hungarian Reform Church on Beatty St. Tried to find Joe, but with no luck. We had a great time together at Jr#4, too. Definitely not "the Pastor's son"!!
He was a good guy and we often car pooled in early days of College of NJ. I have completely lost contact with him. Oh yeah, music theory class... We had a cast of characters in that room with Ralph Binz.
Second year was with Harry..I think our senior year. I still have all my notes and a music score for "April In Paris" that I got a B- on. Damn those chords and G-clef!! I don't remember having Ralphy...didn't get along with him after he kicked me off Red Band because I missed a football game...right in the middle of practice..he stopped the band and said,"Mr Nagy put your horn away and leave". In the pic of the Red Band in our '61Bobashela..playing "Early Autumn"..you our leader...I am sitting behind Brian McKeever and Tommy Midura looking totally rejected!!
Saxman,
Right, Harry Mulder but he would have been 3rd year with 2nd year with Giammario. Just had lunch with he and Matt Giammario. I thought you played tenor in my band. I don't recall you being asked to leave the band. You will have to fill in the blanks for me.
When I was little it was Pastor Petty and "bringing in the sheves"...started whistling the song before the church bells started at 6 PM sharp while setting the table. Out living room looked straight down Harding, past the church, to the Cigar factory. I can still remember the bells, actually ALL the bells at 6.
Haven't thought of Ralph Binz and Joe Klesken in years. You guys are making my brain work too hard!
Bob Reck
Used to refer to Binz as "Roland" a character on TV. Sometimes also referred to him as "Snake". He was a task master and an excellent musician but we were just street munchkins and did not know any better.
Ah yes, Snake. Pass, you bring back to me the fondest of memories of Ralphie, especially my days with him at JR#4. 3 of us, Joe Klesken, Barry Cray (both trumpet players) and me kept Ralph's blood pressure up, but when he kept us "after school" in the old glass-enclosed music room, he taught us much about music..and we learned! We were extremely fortunate to have musical talents such as Ralph Binz, Harry Mulder and Mario Giammario as our music mentors....as well as my sax teachers Tony Conti and Walt Mellor. They all did their job..and did it with passion.
