Back in the day there were no cell phones. There was no cable TV,
There were no VCRS or DVDS. There was no Internet. There were
no Video Games. Gosh.
So when Summer came and School was out, on most nice days
we were playing in the yard, or at the park, or hanging over
someones house or riding our bikes.
Mom had to call us in for supper at 4 PM !!
Soda Bottles were returnable and you got a nickle for each one.
Get 5 bottles and for a quarter you could get a Soda, Chips,
and a Candy Bar. There used to be an Ice House on
Rusling and Liberty. Real OLD folks would hang there
(they were like 16 to 18 years old !!). Under the big loading
porch of this ice house was the Motherlode of returnable
bottles. I have kept this valuable secret information a secret..
...until now !!

I remember getting a medium plain pizza and 2 cokes for $1.00 at Eddy Kay's bar/pizza joint.
Eddie Ks 257 Grand Street :)
Hung out at Eddy K's after playing basketball at Chestnut Playground when there were 2 full courts. we usually lowered one down to nine feet so we could slam dunk like Dr. J
Used to go down by the prison and get the pink balls hit over the walls and play curb ball for hours. I can't imagine the kids today doing that with all the video games.
Anybody remember getting in the car and going into Hamilton and pool-hopping.
Do you remember having to wait to use the phone at home because someone else was on it. I think it was called a party line.
Does anyone remember riding around town? We covered pretty much the same streets going around and around passing each other and/or trying to find the 'guy' we wanted to see..lol..This would have been around the midde of the 60's.
Hwey Anonymous...you sound like you spent some time in my neighborhood...Chambersburg Dairy Bar....Chestnut Playground (remember the dances there?..I won a dance contest dancing to Rockin' Robin with Mary Jane Bodnar) and Eddy K's...and the phone? If I couldn't use it at home..or wanted privacy..I went down to Milners' Drug Store on Beatty and Tremont and used the phone...Remember Koslow's department store??
Other things I did as a kid...."borrow" some hot bottles of Coke from the Coke Factory on Chestnut Ave..next to Duke Malaci's house...learned how to open the caps (not twist then) on car bumpers :)
Saxman,
Greetings from South Carolina
I can't believe you remember the Coke Factory on Chestnut. We always would hang out there to free hot Cokes (the workers there use to give them to us). We use to hang in Duke's also. He was good friends with my uncle Jimmy. Duke's mom lived on Mott St. Almost all the bars that were mentioned were my Dad's customers when he sold beer.
When I worked for NJ Dept of Treasury in town I would hook-up with Maggie Malaci in the cafeteria
thought she was hot.
Remember when Duke was found in the trunk of his car in the Jersey Pines???
Saxman,
I remember when Duke was found in the trunk of the car, I forgot to mention it. How could I not know being he was friends with my uncle.
How about American Bandstand. Me and my friends cut school once to go to Phila. to get on the show. We got in and were on the show. Parents never found out.
I remember the Coca Cola plant. It was just across from IC school. In 1961 (I think) you could peer thru the front window and watch the bottles going by on the conveyer getting filled. But it closed soon after. What a sight it was. For a nine year old, awesome!
