Trenton folks who have moved from the area note that
the term Tomato Pie is not used in other places.
This is something I did not know as I have always lived
here. This is fascinating to me:)
I also read on the net from folks that Quoits are unknown
outside this area.
I always knew Pork Roll was regional and am told folks
in North Jersey and New York call it Taylor Ham.
I have never heard a person call it that ever.
I love Scrapple but have been told thats also a regional
item.
I also read that in some places Calzone is made with Cottage
Cheese. Thats a sacrilege.
Hey I am getting hungry :)))))) !!!

There is a difference in pizza and tomato pie. Pizza is made with a sauce (pizza sauce), tomato pie has real chunks of tomato on it and is better. As for pork roll, I don't think I've ever seen it here in SC. What a pitty.
My Grandma had different terms
for a few items as well.
Comet Cleanser or Ajax Cleanser
were "Dutch Cleanser".
Pressed Ham was "Prepared Ham".
When we kids got rowdy she would
say we were behaving like
"Coxys Army".
She did call Pork Roll Pork Roll
however:)

When I moved to Florida, I couldn't find Pork Roll and whenever someone came to visit, then had to bring me the 'log'..lol.I can find it now in our local grocery store, in a box with either 4 slices or 8. Now, if only I can find the right hard roll to go with it and of course 'white' american cheese. I never had to specify what color before until I moved here!!..lol..The tomato pies I remember had more tomato sause and less cheese. Now, they try to sell you on more cheese..nope, I always ask or more sause. OH and people around here never heard of chicken roll. I use to buy it all the time at Thriftway and the kids loved it..lol..(yeah, it was a good price)..lol..
I loved Chicken Roll too:)
Especially on a hard roll with
Mayo and cheese:)
Up here in New Hampshire mostly all pizza and Italian-called restaurants are run by Greeks...now I like Greek food, but in no way is it Italian!!!
I get my dose of GOOD food when I visit family in Trenton..or on our Summer vacation to LBI..and for relly authentic Italian food we go down to the North End in Boston.
My into to real Tomatoe Pie was at Sam's on South Broad St...first thing you saw when you entered was the big red Coke box.!
For a while, Landolfi's in Pawleys Island, SC would have me bring them 40-50 pounds of pork roll every time I drove down. People loved it but he has since eliminated the grill in favor or preparing other offerings.
At an association I belong to, no one knew what I was talking about when I said pork roll. I told them for our first meeting in January, which was this past Tuesday night, I would bring in sandwiches..They all loved cheese pork roll and asked where I got it..lol..Actually, a local grocery store carries it in boxes of 4 or 8 slices. No good Italian rolls though; had to use hamburger rolls..but, still good..
tomato pie, pork roll, and quoits...TRENTON!!!
my "formal" burg summer education in washington playground...(it was not called a park)... was becoming a master at quoits and catch five (for the unknowing...cf is a card game...but, if you are here on this blog you probably know the game).
i have to go to harry's army navy to get a set of quoits.
Regarding Trenton and Tomato Pies, in my opinion, there is no comparison to a Tomato Pie anywhere and I've been nearly everywhere. In the early days of Tomato Pies in Trenton, signs may advertised "Opitz". The spelling is approximate but it may be the origin of the word "Pizza". Trenton's Italian Food was (and I guess remains) the best there is anywhere. Boy do I miss a tomato pie and a good pork roll sandwich.
Add "Catch Five" to the list.I've been to tons of places in my life and presently live in south jersey, and no other person I've ever met outside of trenton has heard of that card game.
