Philadelphia TV in The Burg

I have added a Philly TV history site to the bloglist. Here are some
names from folks on TV back then:
Bill "Wee Willie" Webber, Tom Brookshire, John Facenda, Dick
Clark, Ed McMahon, Jane Norman as "Pixanne", Al Meltzer,
Hy Litt, Larry Kane, Ed Harvey, Jerry Blavat, Sally Starr, Gene
London, Tom Snyder, Larry Ferrari, Al Alberts, Diane Allen,
Captain Noah, Joe Niagra, Sid Mark, Jim O Brien, Dr. Shock,
Don Tollefson, Joe Pellegrino, Harry Kalas, Ernie Kovacs,
Bertie the Bunyip, Bill Campbell, Chief Halftown, Gary Geers,
Rob Jennings.
Remember those Krass Brothers TV ads:)))
Remember the Steel Pier show on Saturdays from Atlantic City?
Remember the TV ads when Great Adventure first opened?
Remember those big wood TV consoles about the size of a buick?
And we actually had to get off the couch or chair to change the
channel:))
Of Course if you had a roof antenna you could point it towards
New York and get channels 2, 4,5,7,9,11, & 13.
Then you were living in style and could see the Yanks or Mets:)
Remember?

Yeah, that was pretty funny getting NY and PHilly stations..lol..When my boys were little (in the 80's) we met Chief Halftown at Dutch Wonderland in Pa. As a teen, I remember dancing on the Ed Hurst show on the 'pier'..lol..how fun!..As a preteen, I was learning to dance with my older cousin as we watched American Bandstand. The show was never the same when it went out west. :( Let's not forget the Mickey Mouse Show on in the afternoon!! Meeska Mouska Mouseketter...lol.."and the mouse cartoon for today is...."...lol

Does anyone remember what Dick Clark did on local Philly TV before moving on to Bandstand?....to replace who??

I don't know what he did before Bandstand, but I think he replaced two guys, not sure. One of the them was Bob Horn and I can't remember the other guys name. I'll see if I can find out and post it.

The host of American Bandstand was Bob Horn with a co-host by the name of Lee Stewart until 1955. Then just Bob Horn until 1956 when he was fired due to a drunk driving charge. Dick Clark took over in 1956. Before he was on Bandstand he was a TV newscaster in Phila., that was in 1952 until Bandstand.

Got onto the show 3 times in 2 years and the highlight of the times was dancing the Stomp with Frannie Giordano...tried to slow-dance with Justin (of Justin & Bob)...just didn't work out..I wasn't a blonde

Not a TV personality, but if mention Joe Niagra then you must mention Hy Lit.

I still have the WAAT HOT 100 and WIBG lists they used to give out at Kresges 5&10, when you bought a record. Found them in my old scrapbook with a lot of other Trenton stuff. Anybody remember Ace Records or old Mr. Glover, both near the Battle Monument. Us hard core R&B record collectors actually walked down there to buy stuff that wasn't main stream at the time. Used to bump into Blavat there, until he found it was cheaper to borrow my records. Never did return them.

Bought a whole lot of 45's at Ace..Honky Tonk Bill Doggett...Slow Walk Sil Austin..Little Richard. While in the area we always stopped at Ted's for a cheese steak...and on weekend nights after gigs would drive up there...double park..get the food and sometimes jam with other musicians right there at Battle Monument Park...betcha' can't do that today........

Barbara, I use to have all the sheets with the songs and their position for the week. I kept them until one day they disappeared. I do believe my mother cleaned up a litle too much.:( I remember listening to WAAT and winning so many first caller stuff...I think one of the last things I won was the record by Mongo Jerry...what was that song??? In the Sumertime?

I had the same super clean mom. She threw out all of my baseball cards 'cause she said we would get "paper mites". Whats that all about? If she didn't throw them out I wouldn't still be working. Luckily, most of that stuff went in my scrapbook, which she thought was a better hobby than baseball cards...they survived.

Paul,
Right now you couldn't jam with the musicians in COLUMBUS PARK. So Sad...
