I recall going to Mimi's after school at Saint Joachims to go get a lime ricky or some home made Italian Ice. It was also known as Chiarmello's as I recall, It was no longer a bakery in the 60's as I remember, more as a fountain service place and candy. My father told me they were a great bakery before that. There was also a small place on Hudson street that made some awesome Italian Ice,we called it Anne's.
Speaking of Saint Joachims, I'm sure we all have fond, but strict memories of Monsignor Cardelia. As an altar boy for 4 years, and serving mass with him, that man didn't tolerate any shenanigans!
Anyone remember seeing the rats in the window of Happys? Good times!!
Growing up on Butler Street the first 40 years of my life are still my favorite memories.

There was another bakery called Anthony's. We use to go there with my Mom on Sunday after mass to by Italian pastries. I think she bought snow flake rolls there, too.

Hey, how about Kramers (bagels). I forget what street they were on. It must be the water because they just don't do bakery stuff in Central Florida like Trenton..lol..

Rosemary,

The street that Kramers was on was Hudson. It must be the water in South Carolina too because you can't get good bagles or Italian bread here. We don't really have any bakeries here, they are in the food stores. That really sucks.

How about Eddie's Donuts on Hamilton.

I remember going to Kramer's for begels on the way back from the train station on Saturday nights to pick up the Sunday NY Times when it came in. I think the Times in those days must have weighed 8 or 9 pounds.
Plus the bag of hot begels. It was quite a schlep.

I know this is maybe 12 years after the latest post but if anybody is still monitoring this I remember Paramount bakery on Genesee Street I used to go there lots of mornings I used to go to Harrison elementary School that's right down the street from the bakery and I would always get there donuts the one that I like the most was the chocolate donut I think it had cinnamon and a chocolate cover on top if somebody knows anything about that bakery and the exact donuts that they sold get in contact with me I like to see if I can find something similar to where I'm at now I live in Florida I moved from Trenton New Jersey down here in 2006 thank you

Happy s! I would get a jelly doughnut and a juice! I went to SJS until 7th grade. I graduated from St. Francis on Front St. eight grade.

I remember Paramount Bakery very well. They had the best cakes and big!!
I also remember Happys and their cream donuts after Mass on Fridays during Lent the nuns for some reason allowed us to cross the street and buy our breakfast. BTW, do not know where you are in Florida but I am in South Fl Ft Lauderdale for over 35 years. We used to have Italian groceries but area has changed and lucky to have the one Italian grocer.

BTW, for the person who posted about the rats. never saw a rat in Happys Window and boy am I glad of that. I would never had gone back for donuts. Had to be pretty bad to have rats during the day.
