Remember Circle F? Remember Il Progresso Newspaper?
Remember Bocce ? Remember Nicky Tomasulo Realty on Hamilton
near Columbus Park? I am told there were Pinball places all over the
Burg. Remember the One Food Store? Toms Record Shop near
Stans Deli on South Clinton? Remember the Jesus Saves Church

Gee, do you remember when the Bijou Theater, on Broad Street, was a dance club in the early 60's? It wasn't that for long, but I do remember walking pass it one day and hearing 'good' music. I thought it opened again only to realize it was a church..with soul...lol..
Hi Rosemary:)
The Bijou Theatre located at
the corner of South Clinton and
Chestnut Avenue became the place
with the JESUS SAVES sign on it:)
If I remember it right:))
Mike
lol..that's right..it was S Clinton..lol..
I have been told FRANK sang
there. Dont know if thats true:)
Mike:)
Hey Ro...that good music was probably me!! When the Bijou reopened as a dance club, our band Bob Cairo & the Galaxies (I played sax, Johnny Dicepalo played drums - he went on to join Jay & the Americans and then teamed up with Donald Becker and Walter Fagan (who where also backup musicians with the Americans) and formed Steely Dan!!
Johnny was their first drummer.
oops, that is Walter Becker bassist and Donald Fagen keyboards for Jay & the Americans became Steely Dan...sorry, gettin' old!!!
Trenton used to have about 5 theaters at ont time. trent, mayfair, greenwood, one other downtown and one at the old Korvettes shopping center. (Ewing)
How about the Warren downtown trenton, or the Texas Weiner Place. how about the Hole in the Wall(small pinnball place across from the CYO on Broad st.) Casino hot Dogs on Anderson?
I remember BB King playing at Mercer County Community College when it first opened around 1972?
BB King at Mercer? Wow !
MCCC was a good place. One
of my Alma Maters.
Except you would freeze going to
the car in Jan & Feb!!
Sax :
Steely Dan great music.
Donald Fagen grew up about
25 miles from the Burg in
South Brunswick NJ:)
Mack:
Dicepalo, Fagen, Becker and me hung out, and jammed, quite a bit..I remember going up to Donald's house and then into the City for their recording sessions.
How about the Chambersburg Community House on Clinton and Beatty Sts???
Joined my first singing group there..with Larry Steele and Mike Cannon...first song we sang accapella was...Where Are You Little Star....all the girls just loved us...gave me "inspiration" to continue in the music business!!
Is Larry Steel the same Larry Steel that use to go to the Capital Roller Rink?
Yes he is....Larry got me kicked out of the Rink for LIFE!!! He dared me to carve my name in the back of a seat with a switchblade..sure enough an usher saw me and took me to the office..I was bannished but snuck back in many times after that.
I understand through another Trenton friend that Larry is still in the Trenton area.
Mack,
About Frank singing at the Bijou, don't think so. My brother-in-law said he did sing somewhere in Trenton, at some club, and he is one of the biggest Frank fans I know. My girlfriend Mary Ann said she thinks it was the Columbus Lounge, but she's not 100% sure. I'm still working on it.
Saxman,
It's me Barbara. This Bob Cairo you mentioned, I think he is my cousin on my Mother's side. His Father was my Mother's brother. Small world. Do you still keep in touch with him.
Mack,
sorry, that was Frank, Jr. who sang at the Columbus Lounge

Talking about the Columbus Lounge..a Trenton group I managed and did the light show for FIRE
played there many times and we where scheduled to play on New Year's Eve the year the lounge burned down. Lost all the equipment..man what a fire!
My best friend durmmer Johnny Dicepalo was in the group..Johnny went on to play with Jay & The Americans...and then joined up with fellow American backup musicians Becker & Fagen and formed Steely Dan...Johnny was their first drummer and left the group (unfortunatley) when they left for the West Coast.
Does anyone remember who owned the Columbus Lounge???
Saxman,
B here. I think the Columbus was owned by one of the Baldiassari brothers (Johnny). My brother-in-law worked for Eddie at the check cashing place. They are really good friends. Eddie lived around the corner from us when we lived on Chestnut Ave. Thanks for the info about Bobby. I know his real last name wasn't Cairo.
Paulie: Tried to look at the pictures on classmate site, restricted unless you're a member, do you have a direct line to yours? Love to see the pictures. Joe
