Appraisal Exchange 1095 South Broad Street, The Burg

1095 South Broad Street, The Burg. Appraisal Exchange.
Edwin MacNicoll my Dad owned this for many years.
I loved working here with my family and miss the place.
There were a bunch of folks who came around here
and were part of the place as was my Dads fantastic
CD collection. I would often arrive from doing stuff out
on the road in the late afteroon or early evening.
Just as a local radio station played Sinatra for an hour.
My father was President of the National Association of
Independent Fee Appraisers. The largest and one of the
most important Appraisal organisations in the USA.
He wrote the first Historic Appraising course.
We are now out in Mercerville.
But many many great working days were spend here
in this building in The Burg:)

Once The Broadway Record Center, The Burg

The Blue store in this image was once The Broadway Record
Center. I bought many records here long ago.
Remember Chester gave you a card when you bought a
record and if you got it punched 10 times you got a free
record. This is the 800 Block of South Broad Street.
Groovy:)
UPDATE: Barbara says don't forget Blanks Pharmacy.
UPDATE 2: Sax says Stanleys Appliances there too.

Factory and then a Warehouse. Now I think its an
enviromentally friendly Office Building.

Campi's 634 Whittaker Avenue, The Burg

Campi's, 634 Whittaker Avenue, The Burg.
I am so happy I was able to find this picture:)

One thing I remember about going to the Store in the Burg.
It could be Campi's or Acme on Roebling Avenue or some
place else..
You go into the store to get something for your Ma and
there is an Old Lady or Old Man there that says
"hey I remember you when you were THIS big"...and
you are trying to be nice but they are talking about
you when you were like 2 and you can't remember
this person's name.
Then they tell you their name.
Then you find out they know somebody from your
family..."your uncle Jimmy married my brothers daughter
and or went out with my brothers daughter.
Then they might say things about Jimmy you
did'nt know like "Jimmy used to throw quarters at the horses
he bet on when they were losing"
You don't care what Jimmy did but find this highly
amusing. This was our Burg.
Remember?
UPDATE: Barbara says don't forget Risoldi's and she is right:)

Franklin Elementary School The Burg

Franklin Elementary School, 200 William Street (Corner
of William Street and Liberty Street), The Burg.
I went to Franklin School :) When they located our
Polling Station there for elections it was great to see the
inside of the ole place. I looked in the Library and saw
those tiny colored chairs and thought were we ever that
small:) I could hear echos of Ms Adams going on about
Mrs Pines Purple House and The Cat in The Hat and the
United Nations:) Remember kids dont mess with Ms
Adams Typewriter:)
I can see a classmate going out on the ledge by the window
Ms Adams had left open (It was YOU Walter !!).
I won 3rd place in an Art contest with a noodle painting
of a boat (dont ask). I think that painting is now hanging
in the Louvre in Paris next to the Mona Lisa..or maybe
not:)
I loved the Chicken on a Stick they had every so often
at lunch and have never seen it anywhere else.
They taught us well at Franklin School as when I left I
was promoted to the highest classes over at Junior 4.
Thank you Mr Contento, Ms Cunningham,Mr Burke &
Mr Gaug:)
Burg School Days long ago:)

Trenton State Prison Cass Street

Trenton State Prison Cass Street, South Trenton. Burg folks
saw this on their way to the John Fitch Way AKA Rt 29.
Paintings on the side of it? Why not:)
I always wondered why Second Street was a bit wider
than most other streets in the area. An accident of history
most likely.

The right lane here takes you to the Calhoun Street
Bridge. Further up Rt 29 is that walking overpass to
Stacey Park which I have never seen anyone use.

Theatres in South Trenton and The Burg

There were no movie theatres in Trenton in my day. To see
movies we went to Independence Mall 2, Pennsbury Theatre,
Directors Chair, Quakerbridge 4, Lawrence 2 , Mercer Mall
4. But according to CinemaTreasures.org these
theatres were once in South Trenton:
Bella Theatre 721 Chestnut Avenue (1920s)
Bijou Theatre 1100 South Clinton Avenue (1905-early 1960s)
RKO Theatre 920 South Broad Street 1923-1964

Victory may have been Kurda Furs.
There were theatres all over Trenton. Too many to post here

Mastori's Bordentown NJ

Even with all of the great food in the Burg, some area
restaurants are local legends. Mastori's in Bordentown is
one of them. My fave there is the Reuben Sandwich:)

Junior Four (Dunn) Trenton

Junior Four, Dayton Street, Trenton NJ. Renamed Grace A Dunn
now but Forever Junior Four to many Burg folks including me.
Now you kids...no smoking by the fence on Lalor Street.
No waving to your friends at lunch through the windows in
Shop class. No clapping when plates get dropped in the lunchroom:)
No sneaking past the cash register in the lunchroom with your
lunchcard unpunched so your friend can use it. No throwing
paper planes at our substitute teachers. No taking potted
plants from the window sill and putting them on the teachers
desk before he/she arrives (and why is it when I ask who did
this the entire class remains silent?).
What fun we had in those days long ago.
Remember?

Owl there named Mr Hoot who was not pleased to
see us:)
And the color coated nature trails were good too:)
There was an Ice Cream place on RT 29 near here
and I forget its name but the ice cream was great:)

A warm thought on this winter day. Its 17 degrees as I post this.
Here is a summer sunrise at Long Beach Island NJ.
Once my Dad took us down the shore just to watch the sunrise.
A friend brought a cold Pizza and we were off:)
What a cool idea it was.
Of course in the Burg , Long Beach Island is spoken of by
its initials only.... LBI..
I'm goin to LBI... have a good time:)
A good time indeed :)
UPDATE: I have added an LBI site to the bloglist.
It has a 5 minute youtube ad for LBI:)

collecting all the gift wrapping to throw it away.. out with
it.
Things that had an actual use such as clothes or socks
were frowned upon by us kids..
I can see my Ma in a low voice now "Tell Grandma
Thanks for the socks". Out would come my voice
with limited enthusiasim "Thank You Grandma".
What fun it all was...
Christmas in the Burg:)

1025 South Broad Street, The Burg

1025 South Broad Street The Burg. Once Frances Beauty Salon

You can often find similar examples in smaller towns
that have become tourist and/or quaint shopping places
such as Lambertville NJ or New Hope PA and
countless other towns:)

Rob Jennings.
Remember those Krass Brothers TV ads:)))
Remember the Steel Pier show on Saturdays from Atlantic City?
Remember the TV ads when Great Adventure first opened?
Remember those big wood TV consoles about the size of a buick?
And we actually had to get off the couch or chair to change the
channel:))
Of Course if you had a roof antenna you could point it towards
New York and get channels 2, 4,5,7,9,11, & 13.
Then you were living in style and could see the Yanks or Mets:)
Remember?

Tomato Pie/Quoits/Pork Roll

Trenton folks who have moved from the area note that
the term Tomato Pie is not used in other places.
This is something I did not know as I have always lived
here. This is fascinating to me:)

I also read on the net from folks that Quoits are unknown
outside this area.
I always knew Pork Roll was regional and am told folks
in North Jersey and New York call it Taylor Ham.
I have never heard a person call it that ever.
I love Scrapple but have been told thats also a regional
item.
I also read that in some places Calzone is made with Cottage
Cheese. Thats a sacrilege.
Hey I am getting hungry :)))))) !!!

Mercer County Community College

Many Burg Kids in my day know this view. It is Mercer County
Community College West Windsor Campus. Remember when
the Student Center was 2 Floors? Remember when the Radio
Station in the Student Center played Punk Rock? Remember the
Computers in the Library in the days before the internet? Copying
computer games on floppy disk !!! Remember how nice the Quad
was in early fall and springtime?
Thank you all my great professors :)
Mr Chorba, Mr Reynolds, Mr Otten, Mr Collier , Ms Fessler for
Bio-Labs both 1 & 2..and all my other professors:)

The Eet Gud Bakery in Hamilton

Many Burg folks who attended Mercer County Community
College passed by the Eet Gud Bakery every day along the
way there. Burg folks going to W T Grants Store on Route #33
might see it too. Burg folks going to Two Guys in Bordentown
down South Broad Street wouldnt see it but thats a different
story:)

That Burg Soil

Burg yards could grow Tomatos. Amazing amounts of them.
But the yard still needed weeding or those tomatos might get
lost. But a little weeding and a little watering and they grew like
crazy. And a good place to grow them sometimes was that
circular part of the yard without grass because it had an
above ground pool on it last year but you got rid of it:)
Remember?

McCorriston/Saint Anthony's High School

Many Burg Kids in my day went to McCorriston AKA Saint
Anthony's High School in Hamilton. Today its known as
the Trenton Catholic Academy.

Tall Tales of the Burg.

What was the tallest thing in the Burg? Some say it was
The Magnificent Immaculate Conception Church, Others
say those 3 story brick rows on Anderson Street, Still
others say this factory or that factory. I certainly could
be wrong as my guess is as good as anyone elses.
I think that giant chimney at Salamandra Laundry was
it. It wasnt a laundry in my day. It was a Limo service
parking place..but that chimney remained.
I remember Tammarros store was near there as was
the Triangle. Landofi Foods was a few blocks away
down Cummings Avenue. For my Morris Avenue paper
route I would start at home on Liberty Street, Turn on
Washington, Then down Cummings to Anderson to Morris.
The route took me to a point where I wound up going back
down Cummings further up. Where I as a youth would pass
that chimney and ponder things like this :))

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity
Adeline Street, The Burg. A beautiful looking building.
I think my Grandma would go play Bingo here on tuesday
nights. I remember going with my Ma to pick her up
like 9:30 PM. That Electric Power substation was across
the street. Liberty and Broad was 1 block away:)
Often when Grandma came home she ordered Pizza
Rolls from Peps Steak House for everybody:)))

Ernie Kovacs

Ernie Kovacs was a popular comedian born inTrenton and
has been cited by many folks including members of
Monty Python as an influence:))
UPDATE: I am adding a link to the bloglist on Ernie Kovacs.
And readers are advised to look at the comments link
under this post as Paul Nagy AKA Sax remembers Ernie.

Trenton Skyline

A view of the Trenton skyline so many Burg folks knew.
Remember Champale down by the River? Remember those
old Industrial buildings you passed by on Cass Street, then
the Railroad Tracks, then Trenton State Prison, Then the
John Fitch Way (Rt29) ? I remember when the Trenton
Makes was 2 lanes in both directions..and cars were bigger
back then:))

John Henrys

Hudson Street

Hudson Street, The Burg

Roebling Factory

In my Burg era, the Roebling Factory was empty and just there
as was the US Steel Plant on the Riverfront. Now they are
fixing it up and making it useful. We didnt pay any attention
to abandoned factories, they were just there like the sunrise
and sunset. But Roebling created the Burg as we knew it as
it was why so many immgrants came here. I remember
reading of one Italian Immigrant who answered the question
"Who is President of the USA?" as "Roebling". He was being
sarcastic but his point about Roeblings importance was true
for the area. Our Burg ancestors helped build the Brooklyn
Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge among other things.
It all began here:))
