Once the office of Dr. Warren E Crane:)

Dr. Warren E. Crane was born in Trenton, Dr. Crane lived in
Yardley for 53 years. A graduate of Trenton High, Class of
1933, Dr. Crane graduated medical school from the University
of Maryland in 1942 and the University of Pennsylvania Graduate
School of Medicine in 1947. He interned at St. Francis Medical
Center, Trenton, and did his residency at Newark Eye and Ear
Infirmary and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Crane served
as a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the 185th Regiment,
40th Infantry Division from 1943 to 1945 in the Pacific arena.
He received a Purple Heart, three Bronze Stars and a Bronze
Arrowhead. He served on the American Board of Otolaryngology
and the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology
and was the past president of the New Jersey Academy of
Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, as well as Emeritus Chief of
Otolaryngology at St. Francis Medical Center. Dr. Crane
established his practice on 974 South Broad Street, Trenton,
from 1948 until 1990. He was a member of staff at St. Francis
Medical Center for more than 51 years and attending physician
with the New Jersey State Prison System 1950-1991, New Jersey
State Police 1951-1987 and New Jersey School for the Deaf
1951-1986. He was the founding president of the Patriotic
Sons of Yardley (PSOY). Son of Dr. Josiah Wellington and
Caroline Hauer Crane of Trenton, his wife was Harriett (Betty)
Crane.

expansion that year. Later Sam added an addition parking
lot to make it easier for shoppers. In those days this
and the Acme on Roebling Avenue were the 2 stores many
Burg area families including mine often shopped in:)

Our glasses in the kitchen back in the day included
Tupperwear ( it was the 70s !), Jelly glasses, Soap
Powder glasses (?), McDonalds glasses... Some of
the pots and pans from Mom & Pops wedding in 1960
which were nice and I think built to survive a
nuclear war ( I think Dad may STILL have some).
McDonalds crazy straws too (which were groovy ) :)
Gas Stations also gave away glasses at times (and
road maps were free).

THE OLD HEIDELBERG RESTAURANT, Hamilton
A place not in the Burg but quite familiar to many Burg
folks in its days.

Opened in 1929 by Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rennert of Bavaria,
Germany, the Old Heidelberg started out as a hot dog
stand on Hamilton Avenue. In the 1930s that part of the
township was known as Sandtown or Oiltown because of the
sandy dirt roads and the many gas stations that lined
Hamilton Avenue. Beachgoers on their way to the Jersey
Shore would stop for a snack while filling the gas tanks
of their cars. Those with leisure time would sit at the
restaurant's one-table dining area. Later, the Rennerts
added a full dining room, a working kitchen and a bar.
In 1960 the Rennerts sold the restaurant to German
immigrants Joe Kobel, Walter Schwartz and Alfred
Kleinman. The trio also ran Old Mill Restaurant in
Spring Lake. Kobel retired in 1978 and the remaining
partners sold the business to Ruhls in 1985.

METEDECONK (From A Net Site)

In the late 1950s there was a place along the Metedeconk
River on Princeton Avenue that my family used to go
swimming for the day. It was not Windward Beach, we
passed Windward Beach to get there. WE would pull our car
in and there were picnic tables under the trees and grills
to cook your burgers etc. To the left of the picnic tables
was this big house that had a porch with rocking chairs.
Inside the house there was a jukebox. and as little kids
we were fascinated watching the teenagers dance.Past the
picnic are we would go down a couple of steps and there
was a beach, a food stand, and lockers to change our
clothes. What happened to this place?
Answer: The beach you spent summers on was on Princeton
Avenue and called Metdeconk Bathing Beach. It was
established in 1938 and operated until the late 1970s.
In 1985 it was sold to a developer who built several
homes on the property.

Special note for those not familiar with this. The
Princeton Avenue mentioned is down the shore not our
Princeton Avenue in Trenton:)

Love you and miss you every day Mom:)
Mom and Dad both from Trenton. Both lived near the Burg
back in may of their days and they came to the Burg on
824 Liberty Street in the middle 1960s (or I would not
be doing this blog). My early memories of then are
Dragon Electronic where Tammaro's Produce later was at
Franklin & Liberty, and Mrs Molnar having the Deli
across the street and Max and Margie Garret having the
Deli on Woodland & Liberty.

with them owned a barber shop across the street from our

Using the Trenton Freeway coming from the Burg for us meant
going down South Clinton Avenue past the Roebling Factory
and onto the Greenwood Circle to the Barlow Street Circle
and getting on the ramp there. We used it most often to
go to Quakerbridge Mall or North Olden Avenue to go to
my Aunts House in Ewing or to Korvettes at Capitol Plaza:)

Clinton Avenue still looked like it did in 1900. They

The former owner of Hamilton Lanes when it was located on
Route 33 was our own Ralph Lucarella. Here is the place
in 1972. An odd fact about it. They had the best corn
muffins I ever tasted in their little restaurant:)

Todays history geek moment. Most of southern Italy was "The
Kingdom of Naples" from the 1200s to 1860. Yet I rarely
hear that mentioned.. Italian immigration to america begins
on a large scale from this region after unification. Makes
one wonder if the unification deal was a factor in that.
Napoleon Bonaparte's brother Joseph was King of Naples at
one time (later he lived in Bordentown near Trenton).
Napoleon's brother-in-law Joseph Murat was King of Naples
after his brother was. Murat was killed by a Calabrian
Mom who (most likely correctly) blamed him for the death
of her son.

John Cipriano was South Ward Councilman in some of my old
Burg days. I do not know much about the politics of that
day as I didnt follow them as I was a kid. But his name
and picture were often in the paper:)

Mack, you've done it again, this time a beautiful picture of my church!
Even after 50 years living in the suburbs, I am still a parishioner
and served as trustee for 9 years. St Joachim was the first Italian
parish in the Trenton Diocese, established in 1901.By the 40's and
50's it had become the largest parish in the diocese and at one
point the school housed over 1000 students. Although Chambersburg
has changed drastically, St Joachim's still is synonomous with being
Italian in Mercer County. Again kudos on your great photography!

Thank You So Much Carlo. I had no idea Saint Joachim's School had
over 1000 kids at one time. My readers recollections are half the
value of this blog.
