A few of these were in the Burg in my Burg day but many are
from long ago as you see the speakeasys from the 1920s
to 1930s:)
Hi Mack: I remember my mom telling me abut the time when she was a little kid and someone broke the window in Chung Lee Laundry's place. The kids were all scared to death of them because they were not Italians. The kids were chased home and their parents were told what happened. It's hard to picture Chinese people in Chambersburg, Regards.

ReplyDeleteThe Asian americans I knew in my Burg day were George Wah who was
my Gym Teacher at Junior 4 (and
was a coach on the 1962 chambersburg championship winning
baseball team), Kenny Ng at Trenton
High, and the nice folks who had
the Chinese Restaurant on South
Broad Street 2 doors down from
us back in the day:)
George Wah and I worked together for a number of years. A great guy for sure. Kenny Ng was former student best remembered for his running through the halls and up steps of THS.

My Grandfather was involved in all three bakeries and my Aunt was a Ronca.

check of my city directories fail to show any of these.
On another subject, I had Mrs
Ronca as a Homeroom Teacher at
Junior Four back in the day:)

The local Italians have a newspaper of their
own. It is called La Sentinella, and appears every
Friday afternoon. The publishers of this paper
are Ronca and Sanelli, who conduct a general
banking business in addition to the paper at their
office, 688 South Clinton avenue. This paper is
quite an up-to-date sheet containing each week news
of importance to the colony together with editorials
that are never timid. This paper has been in
operation for over five years already. The editor
is Felicia Ronca, who is also Consular Agent in
Trenton for the Italian Government. Italy is the
only nation that conducts an agency in Trenton.
Mr. Ronca's consulate is at 344 Elmer street. The
printer and general manager is C. Sanelli, who is
his partner in business.
